Overview
The Esther Passage Loop is the definitive introductory cruise for Prince William Sound — a protected-water overnight that showcases everything PWS has to offer: protected passages, outstanding anchorages, magnificent wildlife, and Alaskan scenery without the open-water exposure of the outer sound.
This 2-day itinerary is suitable for experienced coastal boaters new to PWS.
Day 1 (26nm)
Whittier → Esther Passage → Surprise Cove
Depart Whittier after clearing the tunnel traffic. Head north and northeast into Esther Passage. The passage is well-marked and free of hazards in mid-channel.
Arrive Surprise Cove early afternoon. This leaves time for dinghy exploration, shore walks, and the ridge hike before dinner. Anchor in 30–40 feet. Sea otter watching from the cockpit is a given.
Day 2 (26nm)
Surprise Cove → Culross Passage → Whittier
Morning is typically the calmest time to transit Culross Passage. This is humpback whale territory June–September. Proceed slowly, keep watches, and give all whales a wide berth.
Exit Culross Passage into Port Wells and return to Whittier via Passage Canal.
Wildlife Highlights

Notes

- Cell service: intermittent in Esther Passage, none in Culross
- Total trip is manageable in high-latitude summer daylight (18+ hours of light)
